Pittsburgh Hospitality Statistics: Tourism, Hotels, Dining and Events

Key Pittsburgh hospitality statistics covering tourism impact, hotel demand, dining employment, sports events and major visitor volumes.

Pittsburgh’s hospitality economy spans tourism, restaurants, hotels, conventions and sports. In Allegheny County, tourism generated more than $6.4 billion in economic impact in 2023, while VisitPITTSBURGH reported $6.8 billion for 2024. The figures below show the scale of the market, the events that drive hotel demand and the workforce serving visitors and residents.

Tourism impact and supported jobs

Allegheny County tourism produced more than $6.4 billion in economic impact in 2023. Visitor spending increased 6.1% year over year, while tourism-sector labor income rose 6.7%. State and local taxes generated by tourism increased 5.4% during the same year. The 2023 tourism economy supported 38,000 jobs in the county. These measures describe countywide tourism activity, rather than restaurant sales alone. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “VisitPITTSBURGH Celebrates Record Year for Allegheny County Tourism at 2024 Annual Meeting”)

Tourism Economics forecast $6.7 billion in Allegheny County visitor spending for 2024. That is a forecast, so it should be distinguished from VisitPITTSBURGH’s later reported 2024 figures. VisitPITTSBURGH reported $6.8 billion in tourism economic impact for Allegheny County in 2024, along with $377 million in state and local tax revenue and 42,600 tourism-supported jobs. The 2024 report uses economic-impact and visitor-spending language separately; the two dollar figures should not be treated as identical measures. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “VisitPITTSBURGH Celebrates 90 Years of Service to Pittsburgh Tourism”)

The difference between the 2023 and 2024 job counts is reported by the cited tourism sources and is not an independently calculated change. The sources also use different periods and measures, so the values are best read as separate indicators of tourism scale.

Conventions and business events

Business events provide a large, measurable source of room nights and direct visitor spending. VisitPITTSBURGH and SportsPITTSBURGH booked 228 events in 2023. Those bookings were estimated to produce 313,700 hotel room nights and $260 million in anticipated direct visitor spending. Because the spending and room-night totals were estimates tied to booked events, they should not be read as audited final totals. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “VisitPITTSBURGH Celebrates Record Year for Allegheny County Tourism at 2024 Annual Meeting”)

The David L. Lawrence Convention Center pipeline included 61 events booked for 2023 and later. Those events were expected to generate $168.2 million in direct visitor spending and 202,100 hotel room nights. The pipeline period extends beyond 2023, so these figures represent expected future activity associated with the bookings, not a single-year result.

A narrower group of 45 VisitPITTSBURGH- and SportsPITTSBURGH-generated events was held in 2023. These events generated $142.7 million in direct visitor spending and more than 114,000 hotel room nights. The held-event figures and the broader booked-event figures answer different questions: one describes events that occurred in 2023, while the other includes the full set of bookings reported for that year.

Anthrocon illustrates how one event can concentrate lodging demand. For the July 4–7, 2024 event, the original hotel block contained 10,349 rooms and was purchased in 12 minutes. After that block sold out, VisitPITTSBURGH secured an additional 1,894 rooms. The reported reservation total represented 11,103 sold room nights. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “Anthrocon 2024 Sells Out Hotel Room Block Within 12 Minutes”)

Hotel occupancy and event lodging

The June 16–17, 2023 Taylor Swift concerts produced unusually high hotel occupancy across Allegheny County. Countywide occupancy averaged 95%, which was 31% higher than the same time a year earlier. The average daily rate reached $309, up 106% from the comparable period in the prior year. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “Taylor Swift Concerts in Pittsburgh Generate $46 Million in Direct Spending”)

Downtown Pittsburgh hotels averaged 96% occupancy during the concert weekend, 32% higher than the same time a year earlier. Their average daily room rate was $428, a 124% increase over the comparable prior-year period. Mid-market Pittsburgh hotel properties reached 98% occupancy and averaged a $363 daily room rate during that weekend.

Out-of-town concert visitors generated an estimated $42.9 million in spending across hotels, restaurants, retail, transportation and attractions. Visitors and Allegheny County residents together generated $3.0 million in state and local sales tax during the same concert weekend. The spending estimate covers several visitor-economy categories, so it is broader than hotel revenue. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “Taylor Swift Concerts in Pittsburgh Generate $46 Million in Direct Spending”)

Sports tourism and visitor spending

Sports tourism added substantial attendance and spending in the first half of 2024. SportsPITTSBURGH-supported events welcomed approximately 43,000 attendees in the first quarter, including approximately 25,600 people from outside the Pittsburgh area. Those events generated an estimated $20 million in visitor spending from January through March 2024. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “SportsPITTSBURGH Supported Events Generate $20 Million in Estimated Visitor Spending throughout First Quarter”)

For April through June 2024, SportsPITTSBURGH expected 111,700 attendees for tracked events and $46 million in visitor spending. These are forecasts for the second quarter. The first- and second-quarter 2024 slate was estimated at more than $66 million in direct visitor spending, combining the reported first-quarter result with the second-quarter expectation as presented by the source.

The 2024 Nike Steel City Freeze tournaments brought in a record 648 teams. The tournaments were estimated to attract 20,000 attendees and generate $6.8 million in visitor spending. The team count is a reported tournament total, while attendance and spending are estimates. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “SportsPITTSBURGH Supported Events Generate $20 Million in Estimated Visitor Spending throughout First Quarter”)

Sports events matter to dining and lodging because the reported spending extends beyond admission or venue activity. The supplied measures include visitor spending but do not provide a restaurant-only breakdown, so the figures should be used as indicators of broader hospitality demand rather than as estimates of dining sales.

Dining and hospitality workforce

Pittsburgh city accommodation and food-services sales totaled $1.895 billion in 2022. This city-level sales measure covers accommodation and food services together; it is not a countywide tourism-impact figure and does not isolate restaurants. (U.S. Census Bureau, “QuickFacts: Pittsburgh city, Pennsylvania”)

Food preparation and serving occupations represented 9.1% of Pittsburgh metropolitan employment in May 2024. The mean hourly wage for those occupations was $15.48. Hotel, motel and resort desk clerks in the metro had a mean hourly wage of $15.01 in the same month. These are occupational employment and wage measures for the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, not city-only figures. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Occupational Employment and Wages in Pittsburgh — May 2024”)

The May 2024 Pittsburgh metro employment counts included 27,020 fast-food and counter workers and 16,590 waiters and waitresses. Those counts show the size of two visible restaurant occupations, but they do not represent every food-service job. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “OEWS Chart”)

The broader leisure-and-hospitality industry averaged 88.0 thousand jobs in Pittsburgh in 2023, 87.9 thousand in 2024 and 87.4 thousand in 2025. These are annual averages, so they differ in scope from the May 2024 occupation counts. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Table 1. Employees on nonfarm payrolls in States and selected areas by major industry”)

Large-event volume and transportation

The 2026 NFL Draft demonstrated the potential scale of a major event in Pittsburgh. The draft drew 320,000 fans on its first day and 805,000 attendees across the weekend. More than 55 million viewers watched worldwide, and NFL OnePass registrants represented 105 countries. These audience and attendance measures describe the draft event and its reach; they are not estimates of hotel or restaurant revenue. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “Pittsburgh Delivers Historic Success During the 2026 NFL Draft”)

Travel patterns were also reported. Forty-three percent of 2026 NFL Draft attendees traveled from outside a 50-mile radius. Pittsburgh Regional Transit recorded 485,000 rides during draft week, which was 51% above average. The ridership figure is for Pittsburgh Regional Transit during draft week and should not be interpreted as a count of unique visitors. (VisitPITTSBURGH, “Pittsburgh Delivers Historic Success During the 2026 NFL Draft”)

Together, the event figures show why Pittsburgh hospitality demand can vary sharply around conventions, concerts, tournaments and citywide gatherings. Hotel occupancy, room rates, room-night commitments, dining employment and transit rides measure different parts of that activity, so each statistic is most useful when its geography, measurement period and estimate status remain visible.
